Who is the Founder
Again, why “Platypus”? The rolling hills of Napa Valley are pretty far from the water areas of Australia. However, it was the uniqueness of this word that drew our “Platypus-in-Chief”, Don Rickard aka the Platypus founder, to pick this name. Don was first inspired by his own experience on a bus tour while he backpacked through Europe. But you see most tour companies here in the Napa Valley all have a common theme, the location of wine country and of course wine. Even though it may have seemed like a risky choice, our one-of-a-kind name stood out and though the power of the referral network, Platypus Tours started its engines in 2003.
From the Beginning
Beginning in 2003, Don created Platypus Tours with only one bus at the time and a dream to share his passion for wine country. Being the go-to for all local recommendations was Don’s philosophy for building a successful tour guide company. Platypus has grown to be one of the top wine tour guides in all of wine country.
When the Valley is open we have numerous wine country tours running each and everyday here in wine country including Sonoma, Napa, Healdsburg, and the Russian River.
