A world-class wine region in its own right, the Sonoma Valley is intimate, charming, and very historic. The town of Sonoma is the home of the northernmost and last built of the California Missions. Some of the oldest wineries in the west are located here. On this tour, we’ll share some of the rich history and give you a feel for the culture of this region.
“We were in Napa last week and booked a Napa Valley tour and a Sonoma Valley tour. Both tours were the highlight of our trip. The first tour was with Bob. He taught us so much about the history and geology of the vineyards. He also took us to three beautiful vineyards. The second day Sam took us to Sonoma. Again, we learned so much from Sam about how the farming works in Napa and Sonoma. He also took us to 3 beautiful vineyards. We were with great groups each time, very nice and conversational people. We were picked up both days from our resort. I recommend Platypus Tours and can’t wait to plan another tour next time we visit.“
Our daily Join-in wine tours are designed to show you a picture-perfect day in the Napa Valley or Sonoma region wine country. This is a really fun and social way to see a hand-picked selection of backroads wineries that you probably wouldn’t find on your own.

The Join-In Wine Tour of Sonoma Valley is priced at $119 per guest ($139 Saturdays), and is offered every day. Tasting fees at the wineries are not included and are charged extra by the wineries. These fees typically run about $20-$25 per person, per winery. All Join-In Wine Tours include a tasty picnic lunch served by your tour guide/driver on the grounds of one of the wineries. Our tours usually last from about 10:30am to about 5:00pm. Pick-up is from local Sonoma and Napa-area hotels, rentals and from selected meeting spots for those driving in for the day.
Here is an example of a recent Sonoma Wine Tour Itinerary: Nicholson Ranch, Buena Vista, and Loxton. We customize all of our tours and the wineries change each day. Itineraries do vary depending on availability.
Wine Tasting Fees
Tasting fees at the wineries are not included and are charged extra by the wineries, compensating them for the wine they pour for guests. These fees typically run about $20-$25 per person, per winery. Some tasting fees can be higher in the region, but Platypus works hard to cultivate relationships with our winery partners in order to keep the fees at an average of $20-$25 per person, per winery. Because of our partnerships, almost any of the wineries on our Join-In Tours will often waive a tasting fee with a bottle purchase or wine club membership.
You are not required to taste at the wineries, or pay tasting fees for wineries at which you do not taste. There are a couple of wineries that are exceptions to this rule, so if this is your intention, be sure to consult your driver. Most of the wineries we visit will allow our guests to share a tasting.
Meeting / Pickup
For our Sonoma Valley Tours we can usually pick you up from your hotel or inn or almost any location in the Sonoma Valley within the towns of Sonoma, Glen Ellen or Kenwood, and in the City of Napa as well. We’ll drop you off at that same place.
Otherwise, we’ll meet you at a pre-arranged public place that has parking. Our meeting place in Sonoma is the public parking lot behind the Sonoma State Historic Park Barracks on the Sonoma Plaza. For GPS, please use this address: 89 East Spain Street, Sonoma. Pick-up time for the Sonoma Valley Tour from this location is 10:30am.
If you are staying at some other Sonoma Valley location, we may still be able to pick you up. Please contact us and let us know where you’re staying and we’ll do our best to accommodate you and see if that option is available on your tour day.
