The Easy, Affordable, and Fun Napa Valley Wine Tour from San Francisco
If you’re planning a trip to San Francisco and dreaming of including nearby Napa Valley, you’ve probably run into the same question: How do you actually get there without renting a car, paying for a private driver, or rideshare?
Good news! There’s an easy, scenic, and affordable way to do it. It’s called the San Francisco Bay Ferry + Platypus Wine Tours combo—and it’s our favorite secret for a carefree, memory-filled day in wine country from the City by the Bay.
From the City to the Vineyards, Made Simple
You catch the ferry from the San Francisco Ferry Building, glide past Alcatraz, the Bay Bridge, and seagulls catching the wind, and about an hour later you arrive in Vallejo.
That’s where we come in. A friendly Platypus guide meets you right at the curb as you walk off the ferry—no Ubers, no bus transfers, no stress—and your Napa Valley wine tour adventure begins.
You’ll join a small group of wine adventurers (8-12 people, 14 max) and visit three character-rich, family-owned wineries along the scenic backroads of Napa Valley. We’ll serve up a tasty picnic lunch at one of the wineries, share stories about winemaking and local history, and make sure there’s plenty of laughter along the way.
At the end of the day, we’ll drop you back at the ferry terminal just in time to enjoy the bay views and possibly even a stunning sunset on the return ferry ride home. You’ll be back in San Francisco before dinner, glowing from a day to remember.
Why the Ferry Option Makes So Much Sense
It’s not just convenient—it’s smart.
It’s affordable.
You skip the price tag of private transportation from San Francisco or overnight lodging in Napa Valley. The ferry ticket and group tour combined cost far less than hiring a driver or even a rideshare.
It’s stress-free.
No navigating city traffic, wine country roads or deciding who’s stuck as the designated driver. Just relax, sip, and enjoy the views. And the ferry has a fantastic concession bar for the ride.
It’s authentic.
You’ll visit authentic Napa Valley—three small-production, family-run wineries where the winemaker might even be the one pouring for you.
It’s social and fun.
Our groups are small enough to feel personal but lively enough for great conversation. By the end of the day, it’s not unusual to see new friends making dinner plans.
It’s sustainable.
The ferry and small-group travel reduce your carbon footprint—so you can feel even better about your day of wine tasting.
What to Expect on Tour
Once you’re in Napa Valley, the day flows easily (and that’s exactly the point). You’ll visit wineries, each chosen for their unique character, quality wines, and welcoming hosts. Some might offer barrel tastings or vineyard walks; others might share stories about generations of family winemaking or the vineyard dog who runs the show.
We keep things lighthearted and engaging—no snobbery, just genuine experiences.
Lunch is included, prepared fresh in our Napa kitchen, and served at one of the wineries. Fresh, tasty picnic fare enjoyed with vineyard views or winery setting and good company—the way lunch in wine country should be.
Your guide handles all the logistics so you can focus on what really matters: great wine, good company, and the beauty of Napa Valley.
What Makes Platypus Different
Platypus Tours has been leading backroads wine adventures for over 20 years, and we’ve built close relationships with dozens of local wineries. That means we can introduce you to places most visitors never find—and where you’re treated like a friend, not a busload of tourists.
Our guides are the heart of what we do. They’re knowledgeable, funny, and great storytellers—part historian, part host – always gracious. They’re also experts at reading the room, making sure everyone feels comfortable and included, whether you’re a first-time taster or a wine club member who’s been around the barrel a few times.
This isn’t a rigid, pre-scripted tour—it’s a relaxed, laughter-filled day that captures the heart of Napa Valley and creates lasting memories.
A Note About Private Tours
Our small group, join-in tour with ferry pickup is the best value if you’re traveling from San Francisco and want a care-free, social, and affordable way to see Napa Valley.
If you’re planning something special—like a private group, corporate outing, or celebration—we can absolutely arrange Napa Valley private tour with custom pickup, including direct service from San Francisco.
Just know that those options are priced differently since they include dedicated vehicles and itineraries.
Either way, you’ll enjoy the same fun, friendly, “anti-snooty” Platypus style.
Insider Tips for a Perfect Day
- Download the San Francisco Bay Ferry App. They make it so easy to get tickets.
- Breakfast at the San Francisco Ferry Marketplace. Enjoy this historic landmark and bustling marketplace full of local food vendors ahead of your ferry ride. You can also bring it along and enjoy it on the ferry.
- Bring a light jacket. The Bay breeze can be cool on the ferry ride and mornings in Napa can be chilly, even when the day brings warmer temperatures.
- Enjoy the bay views. The ride is approximately 55 minutes. On clear days, you can see Angel Island, the Bay Bridge (sometimes the Golden Gate Bridge), Alcatraz, and many other noteworthy sites. And on occasion, the ride back can show-off a beautiful bay sunset.
- Buy what you love. Wineries can usually ship bottles directly to your home or Platypus can arrange shipping for you (so you don’t have to carry them through the city).
- Plan to visit the Mare Island Brewing Co Ferry Taproom in the ferry building while waiting for the return ferry boat to depart.
A Day To Remember
A Napa Valley wine tour from San Francisco isn’t just about the wine—it’s about freedom.
