Winter Pomegranate and Black Cherry Mocktail with Orange-Spice Sugar Rim


A cozy, jewel-toned winter mocktail that’s gently mulled with warm spices, brightened with cranberry and orange, and finished with a subtle orange-spice sugar half-rim. 


Yields: 4–6 servings

Total time: ~35 minutes

  • 1 quart pomegranate juice

     

  • 1½ cups black cherry juice

     

  • 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries

     

  • Peels of 2 oranges (no white pith)

     

  • Juice of 1 orange

     

  • ½ cup honey

     

  • 2 cinnamon sticks

     

  • 3–4 allspice berries

     

  • 2 star anise pods

     

  • 1 bay leaf

     

  • Optional: 2–3 thin slices fresh ginger

     

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

     

  • 1 tsp finely grated orange zest

     

  • Pinch of cinnamon

     

  • Pinch of cardamom (optional)

     

  • Dehydrated orange wheels

     

  • Fresh cranberries

     

  • Rosemary sprig

     

In a small bowl, mix sugar, orange zest, cinnamon, and cardamom.
Spread onto a shallow plate and set aside.

  1. Add orange peels, cinnamon sticks, allspice berries, star anise, bay leaf, honey, and ginger (if using) to a medium saucepan.

     

  2. Pour in pomegranate juice, black cherry juice, cranberries, and orange juice.

     

  3. Bring just to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat.

     

  4. Reduce heat and simmer 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cranberries burst and the mixture is deeply aromatic.

     

  5. Strain out all solids and discard.

     

  • Lightly moisten half of each mug or heat-safe glass rim with orange juice or a thin honey-water mixture.

     

  • Dip only the moistened half into the orange-spice sugar.

     

  • Let set briefly.

     

Pour warm mocktail into prepared glasses.
If you’d like to make it spirited rather than a mocktail, add cognac or brandy.

Can be served chilled with sparkling water.
Garnish with a dehydrated orange wheel and, if desired, a few fresh cranberries.
