A practical guide to choosing the wine country experience that fits your preferences, plans, and travel style.
Full disclosure: I have lived in Sonoma for almost 25 years. However I have worked in the wine industry in both Napa and Sonoma for most of those years.
Both Napa and Sonoma are friendly, charming, and a lifestyle as much as a place. While you can find elevated experiences in Sonoma, and more country-style experiences in Napa, Sonoma is overall more laid-back. Visiting both, when possible, is a good idea. The towns of Napa and Sonoma are only a 25 minute drive apart by car.
If it’s straight-up wine tasting you’re looking for, your wine preference will determine which region to visit. Napa Valley is known for its bold cabernet sauvignon and the Bordeaux varietals, and Sonoma makes more chardonnay, pinot noir and Rhone varietals (although there are exceptions within individual winery offerings).
In addition to the wine experiences in Sonoma, there are giant redwoods, whale-watching along the coast and Safari West. Of course, Napa also has other experiences like museums, The Wine Train, and even a geyser. Both have world-class wellness experiences and spas, michelin restaurants, river activities, extraordinary hikes and hot air balloons. Napa and Sonoma have much to offer the solo-traveler, couples, friends, groups, and families.
The town you stay in will shape your experience, especially if you’re not renting a car. I wrote a blog on Sonoma: the town, the valley, and the county which discusses each area’s unique charm as well as which Napa Valley town is right for you. Fortunately, Platypus Tours picks up from most area lodging properties in both Napa and Sonoma and provides authentic wine country experiences that get you out into the vineyards.
Generally speaking, Sonoma can be more wallet-friendly but there are budget-conscious hotels and experiences in Napa, too. Platypus Wine Tours small-group tour is one of the best value-propositions in either region.
Top 3 considerations for choosing Napa or Sonoma
- Planning your trip around a film festival, wine festival, marathon, music festival like BottleRock or La Onda? Decision made.
- What’s your wine preference? That can narrow it down to which region.
- Which town is best for the experience you’re looking for. Remember Sonoma county is 1500 square miles and Napa’s towns are uniquely diverse.
And if you just can’t decide, the Los Carneros AVA (American Viticultural Area) spans parts of Napa and Sonoma. Platypus Tours can create a private tour to blend both regions and your preferences.
