History of North Sonoma
The Pomo People, an indigenous group of the region, first settled here with villages all across the Russian River. The mid-19th century brought Anglo-American, Russian, and Mexican settlements. The town of Healdsburg was founded in 1857 with Harmon Heald’s purchase of the land. In 1872, the Northwest Pacific Railroad was built, bringing commerce, agriculture, and tourists. The winery industry of Russian River Valley is linked to Mediterranean immigrants planting vines in the mid 1800s.
